The cold wind swept the hilltop tugging at the rider's green cloak . He removed his helm and revealed darkly tanned features with long white hair that streamed in the strong breeze. His sharp blue eyes surveyed the countryside below taking in the the forest and small river that lay before him. As he sat on his pitch black horse he stretched muscles that were stiff and sore from too many miles in the saddle.
Polynikes of Yew, former Grand Marshal, Commander of the Yew Militia, survivor of countless battles skirmishes and duels was returning to his beloved Yew. Too long had he been away. Too far had he roamed .
Polynikes could feel the cold wind beat against him. Watched it bend the tree branches and create small white caps in the river below. Ahead he observed the dark storm clouds gathering, blotting out the sun at times. He could feel Traveler his faithful companion on many a campaign stir restlessly beneath him. It seemed that he resented this further delay to their journey home. As Polynikes patted the black horse's neck to reassure him he could but wonder what they were returning to.
He had heard rumors of war and conflict. Though the lands were never without their dangers he could not help but be concerned. Shaking his head he mutters" yes, I have been gone too long".
A flash of lightening on the horizon catches his attention followed by the distant roll of thunder. Yes there were more than one type of storm in his future that was certain.
He feels Traveler paw at the ground with his hooves and toss his head impatiently. He mutters " Yes old friend, whether going to battle or going home it is better we do so sooner rather than later". With a slight twitch of the reins and a nudge with his knees he signals Traveler to move on to continue the journey.
Smiling determinedly he says" time to return home...time to return to duty old boy"
